The Hilltowns
John Elberfeld and Jane McLean will share stories about life in the Hilltowns, illustrated by a slide show of vintage photographs.
As the agrarian economy of the faded the Hilltowners developed local resources in new ways to earn their livelihood, landowners capitalized on the natural beauty of the region to attract tourists. Knox’s cottage industry of wooden pillbox production gained it some renown. The Huyck Preserve in Rensselaerville created opportunities for biological studies.
This program takes you back to 1880-1950 when neighbors knew each other
and life moved at a much slower pace. Join us and see if you recognize
any of the people or places, to find out what life was like in the
“Hilltowns.”
